Synopsis

The Criminal Justice Act 1988 has made many far reaching changes to the field of Criminal Procedure which are explained and described in the fourth edition of this popular book. This new edition provides a clear guide to the workings of Criminal Procedure, and deals with the changes made not only by the Criminal Justice Act 1988, but also by the Prosecution of Offences Act 1985, including the introduction of the Crown Prosecution Service.
The book will be welcomed by students preparing for Bar Final examinations, Law Society Finals and law degrees, and will provide a useful reference for the busy practitioner. The book describes what happens in criminal courts and gives an insight into the many problems that practitioners face. It describes in detail what happens in a trial on indictment and in a summary trial in a Magistrates' court as well as proceedings in a juvenile court. At the same time the book provides all the more detailed information necessary to help a student understand the subject in sufficient depth for examination purposes.
All the main aspects of Criminal Procedure have been included. After setting the scene, the author explains how prosecutions are commenced and then deals in turn with trial on indictment, sentencing and appeals, before moving on to cover a number of miscellaneous matters, such as what happens prior to the first court appearance, appeals, granting of bail and legal aid.
The book concludes with an imaginary brief which enables the reader to put into a practical context much of the theory previously explained.
