About the book >.>.> Barbara Hepworth has long been regarded as one of the major sculptors of the twentieth century and this is justification enough for a new study. The present volume attempts something quite different from previous monographs and recent critical studies: to refocus discussion on individual works. The scope, which includes examples from almost every year of a career spanning half a century (1925-75), is determined by the Tate Gallery's unrivalled collection of her work. The Gallery now owns fifty-eight sculptures and nine paintings and drawings by Hepworth, but it was not until halfway through her career that she was first included in the collection. The subsequent expansion in her representation is due above all to her own generosity; she presented sixteen works in her lifetime and bequeathed another two.
