Synopsis
Focusing on the period since the establishment of the People's Republic of China, this catalogue accompanies an exhibition of the Ashmolean Museum's recently-acquired Chinese prints in October 2007. Prints include the New Year's pictures of the 1950s, the propaganda style woodcuts produced during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution period of the 1960s-70s, and those made after China's open door policy of the 1980s up to the present day. The catalogue reflects the way in which artists have responded to these cultural, political and economic transformations through their work and aesthetic ideas.120 works from 67 established Chinese printmakers are reproduced to the highest standard in this catalogue, tracing the development from the first generation of printmaking masters to younger generations. An informative introduction and useful chronology are also included.
