An essay by James Gowan on "the ones that got away", looks at schemes by Foster, Stirling, MacCormac, Evans and Shalev, Arup Associates and Derek Walker that might have broadened the architectural culture of the city and provided a countrbalance to the 1980s. Finally, city planner, Martin Richardson, looks at housing and villages and the successes and failures in building communities.
