Synopsis

Historically, and for a whole range of reasons, water has always played a vital part in architecture and the built environment. This text looks at the many uses of water within architecture from its early use as defence and sustenance through to the additional artistic and technologically advanced uses present in buildings today. Many architects continue to make use of water in a decorative guise, whether as a mirroring device, providing a calming force, or as a playful feature. There are those who have developed the use of water to adjust temperature and humidity and those who have created rain within their architectural forms. The projects featured include Sir Norman Foster's Lisbon Expo Pavilion, Shoei Yoh's Prospecta `92 (Japan), Frank Gehry's Sonnabel House (California), Denton Corker Marshall's Adelphi Hotel (Melbourne) and many others which incorporate the design of water features within or around their schemes both micro and macro. An essay by Aaron Betsky is also included.
