Both scientist and a writer, the Count de Buffon (1707-88) was an esteemed figure of the European Enlightment. This is William Smellie's translation of Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle". The third edition (1791) made available here, is considered to be the best edition of the translator's lifetime. Illustrated with over 300 copper-engraved plates, this cross-disciplinary 18th-century work should appeal to scholars of zoology, evolution, anthroplogy and climatology.
