Synopsis

The German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin (1856-1926) is justly called "the father of modern psychiatry". He was the first to identify schizophrenia and manic-depression, and he pioneered the use of drugs to treat mental illness. He was also joint discoverer of Alzheimer's disease - which he named after his collaborator, Dr Alois Alzheimer. Kraepelin presented these and other discoveries in successive editions of his "Psychiatrie: Ein Lehrbuch" (definitive 8th edition also now available from Thoemmes Press). Much of this gigantic textbook can only be read in the original German; but parts of it were translated into English, and they had a very profound influence on the development of world psychiatry for the rest of the 20th century. "Manic-Depressive Insanity and Paranoia" (1921) was the last section of Kraepelin's great German textbook to be translated into English. Published in 1921, the book showed for the first time that psychotic depression could have alternating forms of mania and severe melancholy. In Kraepelin's view both manic-depression and dementia praecox (or "schizophrenia") were endogenous psychoses, originating in biological disorder; but he distinguished dementia praecox as deteriorating - that is, as having a very poor prognosis for recovery - from his new category of manic-depression, which was non-deteriorating. Kraepelin's classifications of these disorders have persisted into the 21st century, yet the books in which he first explained them to the English-speaking world have become very hard to find. This facsimile reprinting of "Manic-Depressive Insanity and Paranoia" should be of interest to researchers in academic and clinical psychiatry, and to those with a more general interest in the history of medicine.

Présentation de l'éditeur

The conception of Manic-D epressive Insanity as a definite form 3f mental disorder, various and antithetical though some of the symptoms appear to be in different attacks and even in different phases of the same attack, is one of Professor Kraepelin smost I iappy generalisations. Naturally, so startling a departure from Dlder classifications was not at first accepted by all, though the way for recognition had been paved by the differentiation and description of Folic Circulaire by French alienists, but further xperience and familiarity with the idea led to the almost universal admission of its truth. It is to Professor Krsepe Uns credit that he also has developed his own views with increase of knowledge, for he now includes what is often called Involution Melancholia in this group, his failure to do so in his original statement having been regarded by many as a mistake. Professor Kraepelin saccount of Manic-D epressive I nsanity, conjoined with that of Dementia Praecox, forms probably his greatest achievement in psychiatry. The last word, however, has not been said on the subject. Many important problems have yet to be solved. Professor Kraepe Un, for example, apparently takes the physiological view that the essential feature of Mania is excitement and excitabi Uty, and of Depression or Melancholia, inhibition and depression of function. This leads to difficulty when Anxious or Excited Melancholia comes to be dealt with, which is avoided if the psychological view be adopted, that the symptoms in Mania are but morbid developments of the feelings of elation or anger, and in Melancholia of depression and despair, or of fear and anxiety, a species of caricature of these feelings as Maudsley has suggested.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
