This book sets out to establish the narrow and elitist nature of the British political tradition and to consider the major challenges to that tradition, historically in the Radicalism of the nineteenth and socialism of the twentieth century, and in the contemporary arguments over Freedom of Information, Proportional Represention and a Bill of Rights. The author argues that Thatcherism was perfectly consistent with the British political tradition, and that the view that sees it as a radical departure is based on a comparison with the norms of the post-war period, which were themselves exceptional. He also examines the role of the Labour Party in relation to the institutionalised political culture and comments on the failure of Collectivism to transform the liberal-conservative framework.
