Laser shock peening (LSP) is a relatively new surface treatment for metallic materials. LSP is a process to induce compressive residual stresses using shock waves generated by laser pulses. LSP can greatly improve the resistance of a material to crack initiation and propagation brought on by cyclic loading and fatigue. This pioneering book was the first of its kind to consolidate scattered knowledge into one comprehensive volume. It describes the mechanisms of LSP and its substantial role in improving fatigue performance in terms of modification of microstructure, surface morphology, hardness and strength. In particular it describes numerical simulation techniques and procedures which can be adopted by engineers and research scientists to design, evaluate and optimise LSP processes in practical applications.

Issued without a dust jacket. -- A technical monograph that provides a comprehensive look at Laser Shock Peening (LSP), an advanced surface treatment for metallic materials. It was the first publication to consolidate scattered knowledge on LSP into a single volume, specifically focusing on how numerical simulation can be used to design and optimise the process. Core Focus: - Mechanisms & Simulation: The book's primary aim is to describe the physical and mechanical mechanisms of LSP and demonstrate how scientists can use simulation to evaluate and optimise these processes for practical applications. - LSP Mechanisms: It details how laser-induced shock waves create compressive residual stresses deep (often >1 mm) beneath a metal's surface. - Performance Improvement: The text explains how these stresses improve resistance to crack initiation, fatigue life, and stress corrosion cracking by modifying the material's microstructure, hardness, and surface morphology. - Modelling Techniques: A significant portion of the book is dedicated to describing simulation methodology, including two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) finite element models. The content is organized into seven distinct chapters covering foundational principles through to complex geometries: - General introduction: An overview of LSP as a surface treatment; - Physical and mechanical mechanisms: The science behind laser-matter interaction and shock wave generation; - Simulation methodology: Foundations for numerical analysis; - 2D simulation of single and multiple LSP: Basic modeling of laser impacts; - 3D simulation of single and multiple LSP: Advanced modeling for more accurate predictions; - 2D simulation of two-sided LSP on thin sections: Addressing specialized industrial needs for thin parts; - Simulation of LSP on a curved surface: Modelling realistic, complex component geometries. The book is specifically designed for research scientists and engineers working on high-value components in the aerospace, automotive, and marine industries, such as turbine blades and fastened joints.
