Synopsis

The ethic of chivalry had its origins in the military revolution which made the mounted knight the spearhead of medieval armies, celebrating the brave deeds of brave men. It was not only a cohesive force among the European knightly class, but also a major influence inspiring some of the finest writing, art and architecture of the Middle Ages. In this collection of essays, based on the Royal Academy's "Age of Chivalry" exhibition in 1987, medieval historians appreciate the artefacts of the chivalric age and explore the nature of the society in which they were produced, the patrons who commissioned them and the ideals, both secular and religious, which inspired them.

From Library Journal

Throughout the Middle Ages, art and architecture served very specific purposes. Artists worked under the guidance of the patrons who had their own agendas, and painting, sculpture, and architecture were closely tied to the social order and demands of the day. Written by several noted historians and scholars, these essays examine particular media and meanings in medieval art, and some articles, such as the one on female patronage by Veronica Sekules, are particularly interesting. The end result is a book as much about social history as about art history. Unfortunately, the illustrations are disappointing, and there was no attempt to correlate the color plates and the text. Still, the book is well indexed and the list of further reading useful. For most academic and larger public libraries.
