The tensions and controversies which convulse the Anglican Communion at present are well-known and openly discussed. This book does not deal directly with current problems such as homosexuality on which Anglicans differ among themselves, causing serious strains on their unity. It is, instead, a selective look at how Anglicans up to the twentieth century have attempted to bear faithful witness to the Christian Gospel in relation to the different challenges of time and place. Problems in the lives of churches and individual Christians can only be faced satisfactorily by going back to basic principles. Looking at how thinkers have expounded these principles over the centuries may be of some help in coping with current dilemmas. The book has an introductory chapter on the question of how far Anglicanism has a distinct theology. Then the writings of selected theologians and movements are surveyed, from Cranmer to some twentieth century doctrine reports. It is shown how the triad, scripture, tradition and reason, characterises Anglican thought, while gladly acknowledging its presence in most other Christian denominations. A final chapter on the salient features of Anglican thinking illustrates the mighty power of God's truth to prevail in spite of the weakness of the human vessels which contain it. The book is clearly written with a minimum of technical theological jargon, though difficult concepts are not evaded. It should be helpful to all who seek a better understanding of the Anglican way.
