This book will provide a gond introduction and familiarisation to Chemical Tanker practice, terminology and standards. It is not an operational guide but is aimed at personnel with little or no experience. The ISM (International Safety Management) code sets standards for your company's Safety Management System and operating manuals. When you are onboard a Chemical Tanker you must closely follow these standards and this book is an addition to them, not an alternative. The Owner, Operator, Master, Senior Officers and all persons onboard your ship have a duty to comply with good and proper Chemical tanker practice. As a crewmember on a Chemical Tanker, you are encouraged to seek more information and detail on the contents of this book. In particular, you should try and review the publication known as the 'Tanker Safety Guide (Chemicals)'. When reading this book you may find terms that are new to you. At the beginning of the book there is a glossary of technical terms. You should refer to this if you are uncertain about meaning. If you are stil) unsure ask an Officer or other member of the ship's crew. After the glossary, the first part of the book looks at the ships themselves and the kind of cargoes they carry. The second part looks in more detail at the specific hazards presented by these cargoes.
