Synopsis
This study links the patronage of the arts to the need of the person, who has benifited from his society, to give back the good he has received. From the first Babylonian, Chinese, Greek and Roman cultures through the Dark and Middle Ages to the industrial revolution and modern times, the author traces the effect of king and church, noble and merchant on funding the arts - and the growth of the artist from slave and labourer to craftsman and master. The author also wrote the novel "The Breaking of Bumbo" and the biographies of Jack London and John Ford, "The Albion Trilogy" and "War Like a Wasp".
