Hard Back. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : No Dust Jacket. Assumed First Edtion. 143 Pages Indexed. Contents in Five Chapters: Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernism and Post War Developments. The last years of the 19th Century heralded the onset of the modern age. The Industrial Revolution rumbled on; electricity and photography were nascent sciences; innovative technologies were bursting upon an advancing Western world and the first fine art to be called 'modern' (by later art historians) was being created by Manet, Cezanne, Monet and their contemporaries. In the decorative arts, too, signs of a new age were beginning to reveal themselves, in techniques, materials, themes, influences and purpose. From now on a series of exciting new movements was to arise from the interaction between the past ansi this new industrial era, sometimes reacting against and sometimes revelling in the machine age. This book takes a broad look at the four major movements - Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernism - and the subsequent developments in the decorative arts from 1890 to the present day. It is of necessity simplified, because although each of the movements is distinct and distinguishable from the others in itself, the divisions between them are far from being as clear-cut as the chapter headings imply. The phases of transition from one style to another were often subtle and fluid, and indeed the classification of a particular designer or piece of design under one heading or another may be arguable - one author's Modernism can easily become another's Art Deco.
