Synopsis

Does social work education and training make any difference to students' practice? In this book Jenny Secker describes a typology of three approaches to practice derived from the accounts of their work offered at key stages of training by 21 social work students. In describing the typology of approaches the author charts the students' struggle to make use of theory in practice, and puts forward an explanation for the problems they encountered in doing so. The question of why some students were able to overcome the problems they encountered while the majority were unable to do so is then addressed. In particular, the part played in the development of the students' practice by academic teaching and by different practice teaching styles is explored. Throughout the book extracts from the students' accounts of their work are used to illustrate the themes under discussion.
