Synopsis

In July 1993, the Scottish Highlands Centre for Human Caring sponsored a conference with the title "Exploring the Spirituality in Caring". The papers given at the conference and included in this volume are offered as a contribution to the debate that must take place in nursing and in the wider context of health care provision. Ann Bradshaw's paper puts the debate in context arguing that nursing is fundamentally a loving response to the human being created in the image of God. Focusing on the inconsistencies of nursing philosophies, she argues that nursing should return to its covenantal foundation and pastoral model of care. Jean Watson holds that caring is the "heart and substance of nursing" and also calls for nurses to acknowledge the spiritual - to be connected with the Infinite and Divine through our "heart-felt practices". From his pastoral work as a Church of Scotland minister, David Lunan provides illustrations of healing through the power of love and prayer and, from an ethical perspective. Brian Devlin offers his thoughts on progression towards a fuller humanity.
