"The Great Ape Project" advances a radical and controversial idea. It calls for the immediate extension of the moral community to include the other great apes - chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. "The Great Ape Project" defines a new "community of equals" which would accept certain basic moral principles or rights as governing our relations with each other, and enforceable by law. The rights would include: the right to life, the protection of individual liberty and the prohibition of torture. Until now, this community has only contained human beings: this book argues for the inclusion of the other great apes. The Great Ape Project is a series of passionately argued but rigorous think-pieces. The distinguished group of contributors includes: Jane Goodall and Douglas Adams (who write about meeting or living with great apes), Richard Dawkins (who writes about the genetic similarities between humans and apes), Richard Ryder, David Cantor, Jared Diamond (author of the best-selling The Third Chimpanzee) and Peter Singer.

Softcover. Etat : Near fine. First edition. An association copy, inscribed by both editors to British animal rights activist Jon Wynne-Tyson. On the title page: "For Jon, in appreciation of all you have done to extend equality beyond humanity. Peter Singer, 12-6-93." And opposite that, on the verso of the half-title page: "With many thanks for what you are doing. Paola (C.)." Uncommon signed, and in this first edition a softcover original (it was published a year later in the US in hardcover). Jon Wynne-Tyson wrote many books on animal rights and vegetarianism and among other honors won the Animal Rights Writing Award from the International Society for Animal Rights. His best known work is The Extended Circle: A Dictionary of Humane Thought (1985) which collected words from others throughout history to argue for compassion toward animals. Richard Ryder, the president of the Animal Interfaith Alliance, reflects, "Jon played an important role in establishing the modern Animal Rights movement that has been so successful in getting over 60 pieces of animal protection legislation passed in Britain and the EU over the last 40 years. In 1977, at the RSPCA's Animal Rights Conference at Trinity College, Cambridge, he came forward as an enlightened publisher of its proceedings (Animals' Rights - a Symposium ed Paterson and Ryder, pub. Centaur Press 1979) and therefore helped to put the whole new movement on a firm and public footing." This book, The Great Ape Project, gathers 34 writers writing about great apes; "taken together, the contributions make a uniquely satisfying whole, blending observation and interpretation in a highly persuasive case for a complete reassessment of the moral status of our closest kin." Contributors include Jane Goodall, Richard Dawkins, Jared Diamond, and Marc Bekoff among many others. Editor Peter Singer is a moral philosopher and professor of bioethics as Princeton, best known for his book Animal Liberation, which extended the concept of "the greatest good for the greatest number" to animals and argued for vegetarianism. Cavalieri is an Italian philosopher with the same focus. Wynne-Tyson seems to critique the first collective essay, "A Declaration on Great Apes," when he writes in pencil at its conclusion "Here, surely, the connection between our treatment of non-humans, and our behavior toward each other, should have been drawn?" A couple pencil lines in the margins of the conclusion by Singer and Calavieri, otherwise unmarked. Laid in are quite a lot of materials: a clipping of review of the book from The New York Times Book Review and a photocopy of another review from Ecology & the Environment; a brochure about the Great Ape Project, related to the book; a photocopy of a published letter to the editor in the Times Literary Supplement by Cavalieri on "The Moral Status of Animals"; and a photocopy of an article about a panel called "The Great Ape Debate" on the subject. A near fine copy in wraps with a little rubbing to rear wrap and faint creasing down spine. A very nice animal rights association . Signed. N° de réf. du vendeur 2044
