The Atlantic eel has long been a mystery to mankind, with all kinds of myths and legends arising from its unusual life cycle. It was not until the nineteenth century that scientists began to understand but there are still aspects of the eel s life history that remain uncertain. This book is the work of Roger Castle, who had a lifelong passion for the eel and knew it intimately through his association with Poole Harbour in Dorset and its environs. It is based on the thesis he did at Loughborough College and reveals how science gradually became aware of the eel s migrations from ocean to river and back again to breed in the Sargasso Sea and the metamorphosis it undergoes.

� propos de l'auteur

Roger Castle grew up during World War II and developed a passion for boats and fishing. He attended the then Loughborough College, studying physical education and science, and for his thesis chose a subject close to his heart the Atlantic eel. Also a keen musician, he played the piano in bands touring local hotels in the 1960s and early 70s. He was awarded an MBE in 2011 for his services and commitment to gymnastics coaching. Predeceased by his wife, Thelma, Roger Castle died on 29 July 2017 and did not live to see this book published. He is survived by his three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
