Synopsis

The Frick Collection in New York ranks among the world's most prestigious private art collections. It was founded by Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), the Pittsburgh coal and steel industrialist, who bequeathed his New York residence and the most outstanding of his many artworks to establish a public gallery for the purpose of "encouraging and developing the study of the fine arts." Chief among his bequests were some of the best known paintings by the greatest European artists, including Chardin, Constable, Corot, van Dyck, Gainsborough, Holbein, Ingres, Monet, Renoir, Titian, Turner, Vermeer and many others. The Frick Collection: Handbook of Paintings presents these exquisite works in full colour, providing key historical information and insightful interpretive viewpoints. Skillfully designed, in an elegant, accessible format, it is a superb addition to Scala's prestigious series on the great collections of the world.
