An absorbing, engagingly written account of a sailor's life after World War Two. Dave Diss begins his life story by describing his extraordinary childhood. His family was so poor that they gave away his younger sister to relatives, and his gambling, womanizing father was sometimes violent - before he left them. He himself just escaped a bomb, and suffered the disruption of evacuation. Joining the Royal Navy opened up new worlds to him before the days of mass travel. He went to the Far East and was involved in action during the Korean War, which he describes excitingly. But it is the unusual, detailed account of everyday life for young sailors fifty years ago that is the most compelling part of his book. Mixing lyrical passages about far off places with the salty language of matelots' conversations, and the routine of service life with amusing skylarks and escapades, Dave Diss gives a no holds barred account of his nine years afloat that will please old sailors and landlubbers alike.
