Synopsis
This is an anthology of entertaining literary anecdotes and extracts about the world of acting, selected by the actor Philip Franks. A selection of poetry and prose serves as a commentary on the acting profession, including works by poets ranging from Tennyson to Roger McGough. There are accounts given of early struggles in the profession from Isadora Duncan and John Osborne, insights into the craft of acting from Juliet Stevenson and Alec Guiness, and some memories of great performers. Also included are fictional accounts of attending or mounting plays from the novels of Fielding and Austen, extracts from Shakespeare plays, and from plays by Chekhov, Pinero, Coward and Stoppard.
