Bill started playing golf at an early age becoming a scratch golfer at 19. His first significant encounter with the mental problems posed by golf came in the Amateur Championship at Troon in 1968, when he missed a straight uphill yard putt to beat his fancied opponent. As he recalls, It was the first time I had thought about an action that before had been purely automatic. What a disaster! I felt totally demoralised Since that day Bill has studied the mental challenge of the game and as no instructional books were available on the subject he set about devising his own techniques for coping. These helped him to maintain his scratch handicap for nearly 30 years and represent his native country, Scotland. A meeting with his co-author Rodney at a golf event last year persuaded Bill that a simple guide to the mental skills required for golf was possible and Golf Between the Ears began to take shape. As Bill explains, If Golf Between the Ears had been available to me back in 1968 I am convinced I would have become a better, more consistent player.
