Violence in and around schools is a global phenomenon, but the gender dimension has been largely ignored. This is the first a comprehensive account of the nature and scale of gender violence in school settings across the world. Its publication coincides with that of a two-year global study for the United Nations on violence against children. The book will raise awareness and increase understanding of gender violence in school settings. But it also presents innovative strategies to combat it. Many chapters focus on participatory methodologies for working with young people on reducing violent and abusive behaviour in school through curriculum development, and educating teachers, trainee teachers and youth groups to prevent such behaviour. There are also chapters on gender, youth and sexuality in the context of HIV/AIDS. As an emerging area of research, this book will interest academics, teachers and researchers in both the industrialised and the developing world, as well as policymakers, staff of NGOs and development agencies. Claudia Mitchell is professor of education at McGill University and the author of numerous books on youth, gender, gender violence, and girlhood and popular culture, including Researching Children's Popular Culture: Cultural spaces of childhood (with J. Reid-Walsh) and That's Funny You Don't Look like a Teacher: Interrogating images of identity in popular culture (with S. Weber). Fiona Leach is senior lecturer in international education at the University of Sussex and has done extensive research in the area of gender violence in schools in Africa. She is the author of Practising Gender Analysis in Education and co-editor of Education, Cultures and Economics: dilemmas for development (with A.
