Excluded from school provides a deep insight into the problem of school exclusion. Arnold et al. view school exclusion as the final outcome of myriad biological, psychological and social forces at work not only in the life of the child and family but also in the society. --Educational Psychology in Practice

The Department for Children, Schools and Families Statistical First Release data for permanent and fixed-period exclusions for England in 2007/2008 records 8,130 permanent exclusions across all school sector provision. This is a significant minority and a cause of great concern to those supporting inclusive practices. To the authors great credit, here is a book that provides a genuine insight into the causes but more significantly the waste and harm created by exclusion. --Support for Learning, Volume 25, Issue 1

This is a very good book, brilliantly insightful in parts and meaningful for a whole range of professionals. Written by four practicing psychologists working with young people in inner cities, at its centre it explores the cases of five young excludes and the experiences of a range of people who have a perspective on these school exclusions: child, family, excluding school and the receiving unit... Excluded from School is essential reading for professionals working with children and young people who are vulnerable and at risk of exclusion. Social workers, educational psychologists, teachers in secondary schools and pupil referral units, learning mentors and local authority policy makers will all benefit, the more so if they talk about the theory, apply it to the cases and others which they know of and work towards strategic adjustments to improving young lives and intervening supportively. I wanted to talk about it. I will give copies to selected professional and academic friends so that I can have those conversations. --European Journal of Special Needs Education, 25:1, 109-110

Présentation de l'éditeur

Exclusion from school or college powerfully affects lives. In this book three practising psychologists working with young people in inner cities explore the experiences of people who have been involved with exclusion from school: the child, the family, the excluding school and the receiving unit. Each party in the exclusion process tells their own story so although they relate the same events, each story is different and the astonishing complexity of the lives of those excluded is illuminated. The book is unique in bringing together different perspectives, including historical, psychodynamic and unstable systems theory. It concludes with reflections on the harm that exclusion can do and puts forward new approaches to managing difficult behaviour in secondary schools. The chapters deal with: Exclusion - a historical perspective; Exclusion - a psychodynamic perspective; Exclusion - a perspective from Chaos Theory; Five case studies each told from the view of the family, the school, the unit and the child; and, Conclusions - the damage done by school exclusion and recommendations for preventing it.' Excluded from School' is essential reading for professionals working with children and young people who are vulnerable and at risk of exclusion: social workers, educational psychologists, teachers in secondary schools and pupil referral units, learning mentors and local authority policy makers.
