Well written and a very interesting read. Pilkington does a great job of explaining all the influencing political, economic and social factors that intertwine to challenge race equality. This book will appeal to anyone with an interest in race equality, those who work in public institutions, as well as students, teachers, managers and practitioners. --Runnymede Bulletin
Pilkington provides an introductory understanding of how political relationships, born out of policy, effect race relations. In addition, the book offers readers a rhetorical roadmap of how to negotiate complex policies that are embedded in archaic tradition. Most importantly, the book gives voice to marginalized communities who suffer from oligarchic rule and un-democratic barriers. In order for the Higher Education community to move forward in its ability to engage in deep, innovative, and healthy conversations on race around world, they must de-construct the traditional norms that continually perpetuate hate for underrepresented groups. Given the long history of texts on race around the world, I would, arguably, rank this book on my top ten list as an 8, given its brief (less than 200 pages) overview of institutional racism. --NACADA Journal, Issues 32(2)
Institutional racism is shown to account for significant continuities in the approach of universities to race equality, yet race in higher education is an under-researched area. This empirical research study found unremitting reluctance by the university to identify race equality as a priority and to take appropriate action. This position persisted throughout the study because of what has been called 'the sheer weight of whiteness'. The stance of the university towards racism was highlighted by a comparison between Midshire University and Midshire Police. The study found contrasts between the occupational cultures of the two organisations, but it revealed surprising parallels in their approaches to race equality, which stemmed in both from a taken for granted white norm. The book draws out the implications of this analysis for policy makers, practitioners and lecturers who are concerned to promote racial equality in education and to combat racism. The book is intended for policy makers, managers, students, practitioners and academics who are concerned to investigate and challenge racism in education.
