Alvert Pierrepoint resigned in 1956 over a disagreement with the Home Office about his fees. He was the only executioner in British history whose notice of resignation prompted the government the government to write to him begging him to reconsider, such was the reputation he had established as the most efficient and swiftest executioner in British history.
What is true is that, ironically, he was an opponent of capital punishment. But Pierrepoint kept his opinions to himself on the topic until this autobiography:
"I have come to the conclusion that executions solve nothing, and are only an antiquated relic of a primitive desire for revenge which takes the easy way and hands over the responsibility for revenge to other people...The trouble with the death penalty has always been that nobody wanted it for everybody, but everybody differed about who should get off."
From 1931 until his resignation in 1956, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, Albert Pierrepoint held the position of Official Executioner. During his career he carried out over 400 executions. This is his story which explores his travels, teachings, methods and colleagues.

About the book >.>.> Executioner Pierrepoint is a detailed account by Albert Pierrepoint, who served as one of Britain's most prominent executioners for twenty-five years, from 1931 to 1956. Throughout his tenure, the Pierrepoint family name consistently appeared on the official Home Office list of qualified executioners for Great Britain and Ireland, including the Irish Republic post-independence. The book documents the legacy of the Pierrepoint family, highlighting the roles of Henry Albert Pierrepoint, his brother Thomas William, and finally Albert himself, who became the Official Executioner in 1949.In this memoir, Pierrepoint offers insight into his experiences and methods, asserting that he executed his duties with a focus on humanity and dignity. His statement before the Royal Commission on Capital Punishment reveals his belief that he administered a humane approach to capital punishment, a conviction that shaped his professional life. He also trained other nations to adopt the British execution system, viewing his work as a historical responsibility rather than a source of pride. Notably, he acknowledges the gravity of his role, reflecting on the weight of carrying out judicial sentences.Executioner Pierrepoint serves as a poignant exploration of the complexities and moral dilemmas surrounding capital punishment, viewed through the eyes of a man intimately connected to its practice. Pierrepoint's narrative invites readers to contemplate the implications of executing justice, making the book a significant contribution to discussions about the ethics of the death penalty.
