This biography is the life story of Germany's most famous World War II air force officer, Adolf Galland. As a fighter ace, he became the youngest general in the Wehrmacht, whose combat career spanned the years from biplanes over Spain to the first operational jet fighters. His command position put him in perilously close contact with the leaders of the Third Reich. Over several years, General Galland has told his story - including much which for political reasons could not be said in his 1950s memoir, "The First and the Last" - to aerospace historian and writer, David Baker. David Baker has spent most of his professional life involved with US aviation, space programmes and defence organisations worldwide. He has lectured extensively on the political, industrial and technical development of military aviation and has written thousands of articles and over 120 books. Now a professional historian, he has been editor of Horizons, Aviation News, Jane’s Aircraft Upgrades, Jane’s Spaceflight Directory and SpaceFlight. He has been the recipient of a number of awards, including the Arthur C Clarke Award and the American Astronautical Society’s Frederick I Ordway award.
