IN SOCCER parlance Hull City FC have constantly been classified as ‘sleeping giants’ because they have invariably flattered to deceive and failed to fulfil their potential. Every so often they have emerged from their slumber to go through highly-successful periods when they have proved to their solid fan base that they do have the makings of a big-city club. But more frequently they have also had their comatose spells when they have unerringly failed to live up to expectations and have frustrated their faithful followers. David Bond’s book reflects on the Tigers’ fluctuating fortunes throughout the 20th century, culminating in the traumatic 1998-99 season and the background to the battle to stay in the Football League. This is the story of Hull before all of the Premiership glory and Cup Final appearance which followed and shows where the club came from.
DAVID BOND was born in Hull in 1949 and still lives in his beloved Yorkshire. He attended Hull’s Bellfield County Primary School and Hymers College before studying journalism at Highbury Technical College, near Portsmouth. He has been a specialist sports writer since 1975, since when he has worked on the staff of the Hull Daily Mail in two spells and the Yorkshire Post in Leeds. He has contributed articles to various specialist sports publications and brochures, he has been an after-dinner speaker and compere and he spent ten years with Leeds Hospitals Broadcasts doing ball-by-ball cricket commentaries from Headingley.
