Fought between July 1 and November 18, 1916 near the Somme River in France, it was one of the bloodiest military battles in history. On the first day alone, the British suffered more than 57,000 casualties, and by the end of the campaign the Allies and Central Powers would lose more than 1.5 million men. Using personal knowledge of the area, research beyond the official history of the conflict and contemporary maps and photos, the author Chris McCarthy charts the daily struggle of the battle of "The Somme".
