A satire on Stalinist Albania under the rule of Enver Hoxha, a novel about the construction of a pyramid whose only purpose is to keep the population enslaved, enabling tyranny to flourish. Translated from the French by David Bellos. From the author of BROKEN APRIL, THE PALACE OF DREAMS and THE CONCERT.

How could the nation be kept under control unless they were all enslaved to a common enterprise? Peace and plenty would only start giving people ideas: they must be constantly kept under the whip. Cheops found the argument persuasive: the great tomb started to rise, and every day brought death and destruction to the workforce. If the building of the tomb proceeded too fast, those responsible were arrested, tortured and executed, accused of conspiring against the throne; if the pace slowed down, those responsible were put to death for lacking zeal. And while Egypt was drained of blood by the pyramid, its neighbours plotted and gloated.
A transparent parable of life under a communist dictatorship, told with the same quiet, sardonic humour and keen eye for pertinent detail which characterised The Palace of Dreams.
ISMAIL KADARE, born in 1936 in the mountain town of Gjirokaster, near the Greek border, is Albania's best-known poet and novelist. Since the appearance of The General of the Dead Army in 1965, Kadare has published scores of stories and novels that make up a panorama of Albanian history linked by a constant meditation on the nature and human consequences of dictatorship. "Dictatorship and authentic literature are incompatible," he wrote. "The writer is the natural enemy of dictatorship." His works brought him into frequent conflict with the authorities from 1945 to 1985. In 1990 he sought political asylum in France, and now divides his time between Paris and Tirana.
He is the winner of the first ever Man Booker International Prize.
