Timber frame building methods are amongst the oldest and most versatile in human history and they are becoming increasingly popular as both governments and individuals throughout the world embrace 'green' issues. Global warming is encouraging the use of sustainable, environmentally friendly materials; and building with wood and adopting timber frame construction, which reduces carbon emissions and the use of fossil fuels, is seen by many as a viable alternative to more traditional building methods.

Julian Owen, who is an active member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, is an architect with a wide experience of the design and construction of houses. His practice, based in Nottingham, has helped many hundreds of families to build, alter, extend and convert their homes. Together with Adrian Spawforth, he founded Associated Self-Build Architects [ASBA], the UK chartered architect's network, and in 2003 Julian was awared an MBE for services to architecture.
