Synopsis

The debate about the English regions is rising up the academic and political agenda. It now seems likely that the government will legislate to create regional assemblies in at least some parts of England. This book brings together the country's leading experts to provide an overview of the institutional and political dynamics across the regions. It provides a comprehensive picture of the state of regionalism in England, charting the regionalisation of England that has occurred over recent years. The book: examines the background to the "English Question"; outlines factors leading to regionalisation in England; presents a new region by region analysis of the social, economic and political conditions; and considers the arguments for regional government. Policy makers, practitioners, academics, students, journalists and others who need to understand and keep up to date with the development of governance of the English regions should find this book to be a useful resource.
