From the cover: WHEN THOMAS BILLINGS purchased 100 acres from the manor of Leckhampton in 1825, he had ambitious plans for their development. Like his fellow-lawyer Joseph Pitt who a year before had a scheme to lay out his Pittville, Billings wanted his centre piece to be a 20 acre park, set in an arcadian landscape with lake, and encircled by villas. His 'Billingsville' would be Cheltenham's southern partner to northern Pittville. The story of its initial success as a botanic garden and zoo; its grand opening on Queen Victoria's coronation day, its subsequent failure, rescue, changes of owner and redevelopment, is vividly recounted in this book. As 'The Park's' surrounding villas, and indeed its 'feeder roads', have contributed so much to the architectural richness, and their occupiers to the social character of the area, there is a full account here. This valuable contribution to Cheltenham's history is enlivened by maps, prints and many illustrations specially drawn for this work. The local community has participated widely in this undertaking: householders by making deeds available and providing further details of previous occupiers as well as changes to the building; estate agents have been helpful with sale particulars; and the interest shown by many other people in response to enquiries has been greatly encouraging.
