There was not one single monoplane in squadron service in 1936 when Wilfred Freeman accepted the task of choosing the aircraft with which to rearm the RAF. Freeman's ruthless quest for quality and exceptional organisational ability resulted in the RAF being equipped with a superb range of aircraft from the Spitfire and Lancaster to the Mosquito (Freeman's Folly) and the Merlin-powered Mustang. Anthony Furse brings Wilfrid Freeman to life in a sympathetic and readable account of the career of one of Britain's most influential wartime leaders. Conditioned by his experiences as a pilot in the First World War, when he saw aircrew needlessly sacrificed because they were issued with inadequate equipment, Wilfrid Freeman took the opportunity to ensure that the RAF was equipped with the very best aircraft available in time for the Second World War. At the heart of Anthony Furse's account is the explanation of the political obstacles constantly placed in Freeman's path by others anxious to grab the limelight, and emphasises the injustices of the immediate post-war period when these same people rushed to publish their own self-justifying memoires. This extremely readable book is a long overdue addition to the history of this critical period. Ref A4 6. N° de réf. du vendeur 035451
