My Dear Emma is a reproduction of the personal diary of Robert Emeric Tyler, a leading London Architect and his nineteen-year old son Bobby, who in 1895 travelled from London to the goldfields of Western Australia. As they journeyed to remote parts of Western Australia they faithfully recorded their adventures and misadventures in letters to Emma and Lulu, Robert Snr's wife and daughter in England. To further illustrate their travels Robert sometimes included sketches with his letters. Upon their return to England, these letters and sketches were copied into a leather-bound diary clasped with brass. At this time Robert expanded on things done and seen with further notes, press clippings, photographs and maps which he glued into the diary at the appropriate place.
