Synopsis
A critical introduction to the sociology of health for health workers, social workers and health science students. Many Australians do not have access to basic health care. This text argues that there is more to health than individual physiology, and that power relations in Australian society are a major determinant of health experience. Petersen examines factors such as age, gender, class and ethnicity, the role of the media and health bureaucracies, and the relationship between knowledge and power.
