Cosmic rays have been studied for close to a century and have given us an understanding of the elementary particles that make up matter and the ways in which these particles interact with each other. The work describes what we now know of how cosmic rays are produced and their exotic sources, how we reached this stage, and details the new generation of cosmic ray experiments that are just now starting to take place.

Roger Clay and Bruce Dawson are senior research physicists at the University of Adelaide and are both part of the international collaboration of users of the Fly's Eye array of detectors in Utah, USA, results from which have challenged some long-held beliefs in particle physics and astronomy. Paul Davies has written the foreword to the book.
