When asked if he would like to write this book, Rinsey Mills cast his mind back to the time when he paid a local garage £1 for the pitiful remains of an Austin Seven. This car's main attribute was a sound body, but there was little else in its favor as the engine, gearbox, radiator, lamps and instruments were missing. He embarked on a rebuild, and remembers the difficulty he had in finding information to help track down the correct parts. Among the ghastly errors perpetrated, through lack of knowledge, was a retrim in an incorrect brown color. To the present owner of YN 215 he offers his apologies, unless someone has since put things right. He hopes the information about correct specifications in Original Austin Seven may help others to avoid the mistakes he made. Also the author of Original AC Ace & Cobra, an early title in this series, he lives in The West Country with his partner and daughter. A keen photographer as well as a writer, he took photographs for this book using a Rolleiflex SL200OF 35mm camera and Fuji 100 film.
The Austin Seven, one of the most endearing cars of all time, has such a strong following that it remains to this day our most popular pre-war car. Followers of the Austin Seven know what a complex family tree of models evolved over the years. The information needed to determine how a restored car should look is difficult to find, but help is at hand in Original Austin Seven. This painstakingly researched book, compiled from factory information, aims to reveal how these charming cars altered in detail over the years. Specification descriptions, chassis and body evolution, production changes, body colors, optional extras, special coachwork, overseas variations – the minutiae are covered for all Austin Seven models. Accompanying the text are over 270 photographs showing all the model variations.
