In addition, the author provides a short history of the Mettoy Company founded in 1933 and the launch in 1948 of the first 'metal cast' toys which bore no relation to their eventual range of Corgi toys. The Corgi range was in direct competition with Dinky toys and owed their great success to the constant introduction of new gimmicks and technical innovations. Marcel Van Cleemput, of French parentage, first came to England in 1935 at the age of nine. After serving in the French army he settled in Northampton and married a local girl. He joined the Mettoy Company on 1st January 1954 as a designer and was soon promoted to the position of Chief Designer. In late 1954, he produced the very first drawings for the Corgi range and was subsequently involved in every single model throughout the years until the company's demise in 1983. The Corgi range was his life and, as well as amassing a collection of virtually every model made during those years, he also preserved much fascinating and unique material relating to the production and marketing of the range.
