Présentation de l'éditeur

In recent years there has been an upsurge of interest - and many excellent books - devoted to the Pals or Chums battalions raised in the early days of the Great War. This is a fine example of the genre, being a history of the Hull Pals Battalion and its successors written by a Hull teacher, born and bred in the Yorkshire city, whose grandfather served in the war and told him tales of the conflict which first fired his consuming interest in the subject. His grandfather s story led Barrie Barnes on a three year search to track down the few survivors of the Great War still l;ving in and around Hull, but also to collect, copy and collate written accounts of the Hull Pals remaining in archives or the families of veterans. The result is an absorbing human story which far transcends the normal bounds of local history as the author traces the Pals from the initial enthusiasm of the early volunteers of 1914, through their training to their blooding in the terrible trenches and killing fields of the Somme. The Pals also saw service in Egypt, Oppy Wood near Arras in 1917, and during the great German offensives of Spring 1918. With appendices on VCs, War Graves, and the Schlieffen Plan, this is a moving and poignant account of idealism, patriotism and sacrifice written as a labour of love.
