The North Atlantic Salmon Fund was founded in 1989 by Orris Vigfusson when it became clear to him that wild salmon from rivers on both sides of the Atlantic were in dangerous decline. He realised that unless a way could be found of protecting the fish during their oceanic migrations, the species could not withstand the onslaught of the modern commercial fishing methods ranged against it. His answer was to mobilise international support and persuade commercial fishermen to give up fishing for salmon, either permanently or for a period long enough to allow stocks to recover. Since then his organisation, which now has branches in all the North Atlantic countries and a world wide list of supporters, has raised nearly $30-million to buy out netting rights in order to reduce excessive commercial exploitation. Conservationists believe this is now having a major and positive impact on restoring runs of wild salmon to the rivers of Europe, Iceland and North America. NASF has introduced a new vision of abundant wild salmon stocks so that future generations will know and appreciate the beauty and strength of the wild Atlantic salmon. It believes that the fruits of this recovery should be enjoyed by every nation whose rivers or seas produce, feed or form migratory routes for wild salmon. Many of the rivers that have benefited and will continue to benefit from their activities are beautifully depicted in A Celebration of Salmon Rivers. A Celebration of Salmon Rivers is a book devoted to the Atlantic salmon and to the magnificent coldwater rivers they inhabit. It depicts, in stunning pictures and words, over fifty of the world's finest Atlantic salmon rivers, ranging from Russia, to Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Iceland and Canada. In fact, all the countries with rivers holding Atlantic salmon. The settings include some of the most intact wildernesses in the northern hemisphere through which, like silver ribbons, the great salmon rivers tumble. This is a must-have book for all salmon anglers, conservationists and naturalists. This book - conceived by Orri Vigfusson, the indefatigable Icelandic campaigner for salmon - is a fund-raiser for NASF, the charity he founded in 1989. Randolph Ashton, the principal photographer behind this book, has researched the Atlantic salmon across its entire range. He visited fifty famous salmon rivers, meeting those most closely involved in the conservation battle and recording what they saw in glorious photographs. The words are written by leading salmon experts form many countries, including: Max Hastings, Charles Bingham, Michael Wigan, Robert Gillespie, Gareth Edwards, Michael Evans, Hoagy Carmichael, and many others.
