Padraic O'Conaire was born in Galway City in 1882. He was orphaned early on in life and spent some of his childhood in the Gaeltacht where he became immersed in Irish lore and literature. He is one of the most important writers in Gaelic of the twentieth century and Exile is his only novel. More famous for his short stories, he saw some success with his writings in Gaelic, before new trends in writing took over and, tragically, like many of his characters, his life ended in abject poverty.
