Thomas Baines, an intrepid Victorian adventurer travelled extensively in South Africa and was selected to accompany David Livingstone in exploring the upper reaches of the Zambezi River. Many of Baines's paintings and sketches are reproduced in this book, with excerpts from his journals to present a remarkable record of the expanding British Empire in images and words.
