Synopsis
The Fearsome Five is the story of five misfits who discover the old truth that what you look like doesn't matter as much as what you do, and that being happy is a matter of attitude. Toad, Bat, Spider, Rat complain about their looks until Hyena persuades them to have a great party with offbeat music and a pile of pancakes. The Terrible Five - the story of five social outcasts who win back their street cred by hanging out together at the beach - a number of new components were added to Erlbruch's personal mythology: the ever-present moon that illuminates his dusky drawings, his love of offbeat music, his attention to typography, and the careful design of the end-papers. Moreover it's the first book actually written by Erlbruch himself. It's this that lends the story its particular humour and that makes it ring so true. This book celebrates non-beautiful people: I think it is funky and cool, sort of New Orleans-ish (my mother especially likes the picture of the hyena laughing with his legs together). Wolf Erlbruch is a celebrated and original German author and illustrator. Winner of the 2006 Hans Christian Andersen Medal for Illustration, he has received many other awards. Erlbruch is recognised for his witty and winsome stories and his sophisticated synthesis of collage and drawing.
