If you or a loved one has been given the very difficult news of a cancer diagnosis, then naturally you will want to do everything possible to beat the disease, and to increase the quality of life through the treatment. As part of that, you will almost certainly either use or consider complementary therapies. Complementary therapies are those treatments that work alongside conventional medical treatments, and while they cannot cure cancer, they can play a significant part in supporting cancer patients through their fight with the disease. But deciding what complementary therapies actually work is extremely difficult, and this is what medical researcher and doctor Professor Shaun Holt tackles in this important new book. Complementary Therapies for Cancer will tell you which therapies are likely to help and show you why you should make these hugely important health choices based on good medical research, not anecdotes. It includes evidence-based advice on such things as acupuncture, massage and mind-body interventions like meditation, yoga and hypnosis and examines the effectiveness of herbal remedies such as St John's Wort and other substances such as ginger and capsicum. But importantly, it also looks at many commonly used therapies which are unlikely to help, or worse will actually cause harm. This is a valuable and significant book - an essential guide for anyone coping with cancer.
