Synopsis

Perish From The Earth centers on the New York City draft riots of 1863, and more crucially, upon a northern wanderer turned Confederate spy who manages to throw enough fuel on the riots' fire to turn American history in another direction. Perish may be the American War and Peace - an enormous claim, but one made carefully. If you take a look, you might just agree.


In this finely-layered fiction, John Patrick Callaghan's account of his role in creating street battle mayhem and political intrigue is annotated by Henry Brooks Adams, who holds a position in history at the Northern military academy at West Point. It is being published for limited distribution by the Northern government, ca. 1880, as the no-longer-United States prepare for a Second Great War.


Perish From The Earth is the product of a deeply-talented author, bearing some of the best elements of Twain and Tolstoy. It captures a startling reflection of its times and our national character.

Since the 1980's, Perry Lentz has been at work on this large novel-a story of grand sweep and bold imagination. He is best known outside Ohio for his first novel, The Falling Hills (1967, reissued 1994), which its publisher cited as among Charles Scribner's Sons' finest work, and which one reviewer cited as likely to be on the top five list of Civil War fiction written in this century. James Dickey called The Falling Hills a brilliant re-creation-no; creation-of an overlooked episode of the Civil War. I don't know if history would be complete without Mr. Lentz's novel, but literature would not.
