"Combining his training as a marine biologist with his experience as a fisherman and his self-acquired skill as a gyotaku (Japanese fish print) maker, Christopher Dewees has managed to produce a volume that succeeds on multiple levels that are often considered mutually exclusive. Part field guide, part art book, part maritime history, part cooking hints, The Printer's Catch is divided into sections on 'life history,' 'fishery information,' and 'consumer information' for 32 families of fish and shellfish found between the California-Mexico border and Alaska."
- The Ridge Times Press, Medocino, California
"This is the best book we have come upon that describes and illustrates the fine art of gyotaku, the system of coating a fresh specimen with ink and transferring the ink to paper. The 63 color plates are all superb, including not only fish but invertebrates - crabs, prawns, squid, and shellfish."
- The Underwater Naturalist
A native of San Francisco, Christopher Dewees received his Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of California, Davis. He taught fisheries as a Peace Corps volunteer in Chile in 1970-72. Since 1972 he has been a marine fisheries specialist between the University of California, Davis, and the State's commercial and recreational fishing industries. His prints have been exhibited with Gyotaku-no-kai in Tokyo, as well as at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the California Academy of Sciences, the Oakland Museum, and numerous other galleries and natural history museums. He lives in Davis with his wife Christine. Of their two grown sons, one is an avid angler, the other a marine biologist.
