Synopsis

Whether they are angry, anxious, or frustrated, children will be able to calm themselves with the dozens of activities included in this card deck. Each of the 24 illustrated cards describes different calming methods\-\-physical, auditory and verbal, visual, creative, self\-nurturer, and humor. An additional 16 cards provide step\-by\-step instructions in English and Spanish for games and activities to use with the calming cards. An accompanying instruction sheet explains how parents and teachers can introduce the cards and the concept of self\-calming, as well as information on how adults can model the use of such self\-soothing techniques as taking a warm bath, making a joke to defuse a situation, or singing a silly song. Each calming method includes suggested activities for a range of ages, from toddler to adult.

Elizabeth Crary is the award-winning author of more than 40 children’s and child-guidance publications. She has taught parenting education, with an emphasis on problem-solving and skill-building methods, and established Parenting Press in 1979. Mits Katayama is the illustrator of Help! The Kids Are at It Again, Unplugging Power Struggles, When You’re Happy, When You’re Mad, When You’re Shy, When You’re Silly, and PEP Talk quarterly for parent educators. They both live in Seattle.
