CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 126th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Steubenville and mustered in for three years service on September 4, 1862, under the command of Colonel Benjamin Franklin Smith. The regiment was attached to Railroad Division, Western Virginia and later to the VIII Corps, Army of the Potomac. While on rail guard duty in Western Virginia near Martinsburg, the regiment was occupied in scouting and expeditions into the enemy's country for the suppression of guerrillas. During its service, the 126th Ohio had engagements at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Monocracy, Winchester, Cedar Creek, Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign. Recognized as a FOX 300 Fighting Regiment.
