Synopsis

Common prayer is so called because it is prayer of, by, and for the community. Uncommon prayer is, essentially, by and for the individual, or so it would appear. But just as in psychology in which one works individually and in community with an analyst (as a representative of a community of “healers”) to bring what is unconscious into consciousness in order to reach a state closer to the whole human being, uncommon prayer in practice brings what is uncommon into the common, what is “uncommunity” into community for the wholeness of the Dionysian fragmented body of Christ. There is a catch—isn’t this often the case?—for there is a “hole” in “whole,” which is why the work is always a process toward rather than a completion. Not unlike the old saw that it’s not the destination but the journey that’s important. “Will,” we ask, “we ever get there?” To paraphrase Martin Heidegger’s famous response at the end of his interview with
Der Spiegel, “Only a God can help us.” And so we pray. So let us pray.
